Alopecia areata: Symptoms, treatment, and tips

If you notice hair falling, it could be due to varying factors, some of which are harmless. But it is crucial to determine the precise reasons behind your hair loss. Martin Maag M.D. will conduct a thorough review before recommending NeoGraft hair transplant or PRP (Platelet-Rich Plasma) procedures. Pattern baldness in men and women

Male and female pattern baldness typically occurs due to genetics. In men, it affects areas around the scalp or temples and may appear as a receding hairline. Women tend to experience thinning hair across the scalp.

The onset of androgenetic alopecia in men is usually at age 35, but it can occur after puberty. Statistics show pattern hair loss will affect 50% of males and 25% of females by age 50. Women experience loss in hair volume as a sign of menopause.

Autoimmune conditions

Autoimmune conditions like alopecia areata are another factor for baldness in men and women. It occurs when the body attacks hair follicles, creating round bald patches on your scalp. Bald patches can develop on the eyebrows, armpits, eyelashes, and beard.

Unlike male pattern baldness, it can happen in unpredictable phases of hair loss and regrowth. The process may repeat after several months and continue for years. Although it can affect people of any age, it often appears before age 30.

Alopecia Totalis is a version of alopecia areata where the entire scalp becomes bald. Alopecia Universalis is another rare condition that causes hair loss throughout the body.

Traction alopecia

Traction alopecia is hair loss due to stress exerted by the hair follicles. You may be susceptible to traction alopecia if you wear hairstyles that excessively pull your hair. Tight dreadlocks or cornrows may cause the hair strands to dislodge from the follicles.

It differs from other types of baldness in that it affects only the area with tight hair. Pimples and redness emerge during the early phases of traction alopecia. In later stages, patterns of thinning hair appear on the affected area.

You can reverse traction alopecia by eliminating the cause of hair loss. Prevention can be achieved by avoiding tight hairstyles and limiting the use of relaxers. However, the effects could be permanent if you don’t address the problem.

Medication and dietary deficiency

You may experience hair loss as a side effect of taking certain medications. Antidepressants tend to impact the telogen or resting phase of hair growth.

Antidepressants could reverse the hair growth process, causing the hair volume to reduce considerably. If you experience hair loss, you can review the medication with your doctor.

A diet with inadequate nutrients can increase the risk of hair loss. Copper influences the hair follicle size and discourages premature shedding of hair. It supplies the hair follicles with nutrients and oxygen, increasing their lifespan.

Zinc plays a critical role in the immune system. Zinc encourages tissue regeneration and promotes hair regrowth. Vitamins, iron, and proteins in your diet can limit hair loss.
