Designs we might typically associate with childhood—the plaid vinyl lawn chairs of relatives barbecues, thick pink, brown, and white stripes of Neapolitan ice cream, and the uncomplicated dominated markings on notebook paper—become vivid woven tapestries in the arms of artist Susie Taylor. Nostalgic in aesthetic and vivid in coloration palette, the Bay Place artist and textile designer interlaces cotton and linen threads to create flat weaves that look just about a few-dimensional in complexity, with the mathematically-inclined motifs and subtle shifts in colour embedded in just the items on their own.
The fiber compositions attract on the traditions of Bauhaus and Black Mountain University by a boldly playful lens and “include essential shapes like blocks and stripes to tackle pattern, symmetry and coloration interaction and the notion that requested methods can even now flirt with likelihood, interruption, and improvisation,” the artist suggests.
Taylor’s works are on look at as a result of October 27 as element of Origin Stories at Johansson Tasks in Oakland. Explore a lot more of her intricate layouts on her site.
