Hollywood Park art program celebrates diversity and culture with local artists

INGLEWOOD, Calif. (KABC) — “Inglewood indicates community,” mentioned Calida Rawles, an Inglewood-centered artist. “It implies strength. It indicates variety. It signifies beauty and residence to me.”

Calida Rawles is a single of six artists picked to be a element of a mural system at Hollywood Park. All artists are centered in Los Angeles and Rawles is one of two from Inglewood.

The goal of the program is to make a piece that celebrates the variety and captures the essence of the surrounding community.

With her appreciate for Inglewood in thoughts and the support of her team, Rawles established a 26-foot graphic above the span of about three months. She stated she’s delighted with how it turned out and glad she was equipped to not only characterize her Inglewood group, but other numerous artists.

“Becoming an artist of shade, a woman, you are often symbolizing diversity, if you intend it or not,” Rawles mentioned. “I am satisfied to have a put in artwork historical past and be equipped to categorical myself and have a voice.”

As this mural was her 1st community artwork piece, Rawles explained she is glad to have been preferred among the other 6 artists and hopes this opportunity can open up a lot more doorways.

“I’m pleased to be a part of it and I needed to produce something that Inglewood would be very pleased of,” Rawles reported.

Guests right here will be equipped to see the 6 finished murals once the retail district at Hollywood Park opens in the spring of 2023.
