Although there are quite a few famous women who have made tattoos more and more popular, these select three have been some of the very first to be well known in society.
• Betty Broadbent
Betty was born in 1909 and was famous for her long career with the Ringling Brothers, Barnum and Bailey Circus. She began her tattoo career in 1927. Her body was covered with approximately 350 tattoos and was exhibited for many months at the New York World’s Fair. Along with her circus career, Betty later became a tattoo artist herself and passed away in 1983.
• Cindy Ray
Cindy was famous in the 1960’s for her body art. As a single mother, Cindy looked to take home extra money by allowing her self to become a tattoo celebrity and travel the world. The sad regret was that her extra money went straight to Harry Bartram who was her photographer on campaigns. Bartram campaigned with Cindy to sell tattoo books and products. Cindy later became a tattoo artist and ran a local shop in her home of Australia.
• Janis Joplin
Before Joplin passed away, she was tattooed by Lyle Tuttle. Tuttle was a highly qualified tattoo artist at the time. Janis Joplin had three tattoos consisting of: a tattooed bracelet on her left wrist, a small flower on her right heel, and a small heart, which became a very popular tattoo design, on her left breast. Tuttle later remarked that he had tattooed over 100 reproductions of Joplin’s small heart after her death.
Thanks to the women above, including many more, ladies are now making their places more known in society and the tattooed community.
